Ways to school

FINLAND

My school trip takes 10 minutes. It is about 1 kilometer. Summer time I go by bike and winter by kick sled. Sometimes I stop to play near creek. On school yard I meet my friends.
Matti 3rd class

My school trip is about 1 kilometer. Before I go to school I must go out with my dog. After that I eat breakfast. Normally I go to school by foot or by bike. Winter time I go by kick sled. Sometimes I see birds and squirrels on my trip.
Venla 3rd class

I leave from home by my father´s car. First we drive sand road to the bigger road. There are two roads and then straight. School trip is three kilometers. There are big hills on the road.
Roope 4th class

I leave from home by bike. I drive down hill and next I drive up hill. Next I drive down hill and turn left next I turn right. Next I drive forward about 200m. My school trip takes about twenty minutes. After that I wait school bus. When school bus comes it takes about 20 minutes more and I am at school. Aku 4th class

Students of 4th class interviewed all other students of our school. They asked: “How you come to school summer and winter time”. You can see results from diagrams below.

Students of 1st and 2nd have no license to go to school by bike cause of safety. Winter time no one comes to school by bike cause of safety.

Unicef-Walk

Unicef walk is an easy and voluntary way to help children across the world.
It gives pupils a chance to have effect and learn – by exercising!
Material needed (passes, stickers, route signs, posters) in Unicef walk comes from Unicef Finland.
Arranged in Finland since 1998 and originally idea comes from Netherlands.
This year funds are raised for Unicef´s Schools for Africa-campaign.
During the school year 2011-2012 Finnish pupils helped 120 000 African children attend school.

DIRECTIONS – how to organize Unicef walk

Schools choose one day for Unicef walk
Before the event pupils collect sponsors for the walk (parents, grandparents, neighbors).
School sends an info letter to homes.
Before the event teacher tells/shows videos/gives presentation about global issues and children rights in class (local Unicef office can help and maybe visit school).
Pupils walk as many kilometers as possible the day when Unicef walk is organized. Teachers mark the round with route signs before the event. Pupils walk the round with their passes and get stickers to it. Usually pupils walk one kilometer round (pupils get one sticker/km for their passes).
After walk pupils present their sponsors their passes and how many kilometers they have walked. Sponsors give money to pupils.
School collects money from pupils and sends money for Unicef.
Unicef uses money for Schools for Africa-campaign this year.
Pupils can participate for Unicef walk also without sponsors!
It is important to tell children/families how much they collected money for Unicef.

With our Comenius project UNICEF walk we collected a lot of money. All in all we collected 3350 Euro! Thanks for all the great sponsors and the participating children!

		Children plan Mini Olympics by thinking about the benefits of sports, E.g. Health, friendship, rules, leadership, etc. Schools are to take videos of the children taking part in sports and discussing the benefits. This will be collated in time for September when it will be shared during the Wales Visit. Each country will need to make a DVD of their work.

Romania - Scoala CU Clasele

General School of Dumbrava, Timis County has 3 schools (Dumbrava, Rachita and Bucovat) including infant, primary, secondary schools.

Surrounding area
Our school, Rachita is situated in a very picturesque area, near a beautiful lake (Surduc Lake) where people like to spend their free time and holidays, near the mountain of Poiana Rusca. The river Bega flows throught the middle of the village.

Pupils
Our scool is a small one, we have around 100 pupils altogether. Development of education in the area is linked to the name of Maria Theresa and her son Joseph II.

Our school building
We have school in 2 different buildings. One of them is more than 250 years old, but nowadays is renovated, the other in a 2 storey building and it is about 40 years old. We have one Info Lab, 7 classrooms and one Gym. Our students are from pre primary- aged 3 or 4 to general school, aged 14 or 15.

Spain - CEIP San Jose

Surrounding area
San José Infant and Primary School is located in the centre of the Region of Murcia, in a quiet village called “Las Torres de Cotillas”. It´s about 15 km from the capital, the city of Murcia. There are about 22.000 inhabitants in the village.
The village is well-known by its industry. We produce a great variety of cleaning products, medical products and tinned-food, such as fruit and vegetables.

Our school buildings
The school was built in 1979 and is divided into two buildings, separated about 300 metres from each other. In one of the buildings (the “old school”), we have the infants and the first cycle of primary education and in the second building (the “new school”), we have the second and third cycles of primary education.

There is a gym in the school and a sport centre nearby with all kinds of facilities, such as indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, paddle courts, football pitch, etc.

Pupils and teachers
There are about 470 children altogether and we are 38 teachers plus another 8 people working in the kitchen, dining room and taking care of the school.

Surrounding area
Our two school buildings are situated in a green and quiet area although the town Gladbeck itself is at the border of the "Ruhrgebiet" (ruhr area).

Pupils and teachers
We have 230 pupils and 10 teachers in 10 classes. There are 90 pupils and 5 teachers in the other schoolbuilding. The pupils age is 6 to 10.

Our school buildings
Our school is almost 100 years old. It has been modernized in the last few years. There are ten classrooms, a special classroom for music and an gym. We also use our gym for quarterly assemblies and other celebrations. For our daycare-pupils we offer meals in our own canteen, which also has a kitchen. In February 2011, we merged with a second primary school not far away from us, the "Hermannschule". So we are currently teaching in two school buildings.

Turkey - Rabia Leman Ilkogretim Okulu

Surrounding Area
 Rabia Leman Primary School is located in Atasehir, a rapidly  developing district on the Anatolian side of Istanbul. Istanbul is a  mega city, as well as the cultural, economic, and financial centre of  Turkey. There are about 13 million residents in the city. The city has  always been a tourist destination with a rich historical background  and a vivid socio-cultural life.  The school serves a neighborhood that is left rather  under developed in the middle of luxurious housing projects. There’re  small apartment buildings, individual houses, some small businesses  and two big shopping malls near our school.

Pupils and teachers 
We have approximately 1100 pupils aging between 5 - 15 and 33  personnels; 15 classroom teachers, 16 branch teachers and 2 management  staff. Pupils with special needs are integrated to basic education groups.

 Our School Buildings 
The school building was built in 2002. There are 26 classes, 2 offices,  a teachers’ room, a multi purpose conference hall, a computer lab, a  science lab and a library in the school. The school canteen is located  outside the school building.
